UIS presents...Paul Temby!!!

Paul Temby is currently a portfolio manager/partner at Dowling & Yahnke. Dowling & Yahnke is one of the largest private wealth management firms in San Diego with over $1 billion in assets under management. Mr. Temby will be sharing his insights about the business and investment aspect of managing a private wealth management firm. Mr. Temby has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with an emphasis in Finance from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he is an alumnus from the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium with a degree in International Business Administration. Mr. Temby holds the designations Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA).

What is the CFA Global Investment Research Challenge?

Join us this Wednesday to come find out how some UCSD students got involved! Our very own UIS research team will share their experiences and the challenges they encountered whilst competing in the global investment research challenge. During the research challenge, students from competing universities present their research and company analysis on a specific company to investment industry professionals. The UIS research team will provide a detailed overview of their research (DCF, revenue models, macro) on Leap Wireless, the parent company of Cricket Wireless. In Week 8, the UIS research team will follow up with a workshop on investment topics including DCF models, rev projections, and industry analysis.

What: What is the CFA Global Investment Research Challenge?

Nicholas Monterrosa is a trader working at CE2 Capital, a hedge fund that focuses on the growing environmental commodities markets.

Nicholas will share his experience of moving from trading equities for his personal account to trading environmental commodities. He will provide an introduction to environmental commodities then detail the trading dynamics of carbon markets by comparing and contrasting them to more familiar equity markets.

Nicholas Monterrosa is a graduate from UCSD (2008) with a degree in BioEngineering. He previously served as the VP of Research in UIS.

What: UIS Workshop (Trading: From Stocks to Carbon)
When: Wednesday, January 20, 2009, 7-8 PM
Where: WLH 2113

Interested in a career in marketing, design, or advertising? The Undergraduate Investment Society (UIS) is holding the UIS Marketing Competition in efforts to promote the 5th Annual Financial Horizons Conference in February 2009. Our conference is one of the biggest events on campus with more than 400 attendees annually.

This competition offers a great opportunity for students who have a passion for or are looking to gain more experience in marketing and graphic design. Participants are required to come up with a cover design for the conference programs (5.5" x 8.5"), flyers (various in sizes) and a poster (17" x 27"). There are no limits to what the participants can design. All we ask for is a clean cut and simple design will attract to professionals.

The competition winner will have the opportunity to work with the marketing department of the Undergraduate Investment Society! Although there will be no monetary compensation, the winner's name will be publicly recognized on all conference programs and on the UIS website. Decisions will be announced by January 15th, 2010.

Nick Berger is a Senior Associate at Amethyst Capital and specializes in debt capitalization for firms in the steel and concrete industry. He provides capital for firms with irregular cash flows and highly liquid inventories. Before working at Amethyst, Nick Berger graduated from USC with a BA in Economics and worked at Averil Capital Markets Group Inc. for three years as an analyst . Amethyst Capital is a boutique investment bank which specializes in small cap and middle market M & A involving manufacturing and distribution firms throughout Southern California. To date, their biggest deal has been Ta Chen International Inc's $200 million acquisition of Brightbest Inc.
