About UIS

Vision

The Undergraduate Investment Society was founded on the belief of the importance and necessity of empowering all students with financial knowledge. We can learn a lot in classrooms, from chemical reactions to the philosophy of Plato, but it takes initiative to learn and arm yourself with important financial tools for your future.

The UIS embraces this platform, establishing itself as the premier organization for every interested student at the University of California, San Diego. We provide access to opportunities for all of our members, including career connections, strong community outreach and service programs, a highly talented and ambitious student network, serious financial education, and much, much more.

To continuously provide value for our members, the UIS builds bridges with corporations, community leaders, and other universities in the common interest of nurturing the growth and success of aspiring students. With these combined efforts, we see a bright future for the world of investing, and we hope to bring this exciting era to students throughout the San Diego community.

President’s Note

It’s a new year, and I’m happy and confident to say, it will be an exciting one. Thank you for taking the time to browse this site, and showing initiative to jumpstart your financial future.

First thing I’d like to emphasize: the Undergraduate Investment Society caters to everybody, not just Economics majors. Over half of our members major in engineering, communications, applied math, or something completely different. All students, from budding chefs to aspiring doctors, need to learn how to manage their money. However, practical courses offering this knowledge come rare at our school.

So, don’t be shy. Browse our website! Shoot us an email! Ask us about our new 2-Track workshop/speaker series, involving material for beginners (those who don’t know what a stock is), to the advanced (forecasting, regressions, correlations, and more!). Ask us about our new high school outreach program. Ask us about the many opportunities and internships we can help you with. Swing by a meeting and chat with our highly ambitious team of officers.

He is currently working toward getting his CPA and hopes to take his CFA Level 1 (December 2008). He is actively pursuing a career in corporate finance, and hopes one day to rise to the CFO of a major corporation. Click here to read more. As a transfer student, she's actively involve with extracurricular activities. Essie sees UIS as a great place for leadership opportunities, where she meets and works with great people, and where she can learn about investments and finance. Essie believes in learning through practice and never set constrains on herself. Essie's interest in investment banking, corporate finance leads her goal in obtaining a Certificate in Finance and CFA. She is going to pursue an MBA after gaining real-life work experience. In her spare time, she likes playing tennis, swimming, and other out-door activities. She is also artistic in oil painting and playing the piano. One of the most enjoyable things for her is to relax on the couch with a hot vanilla latte and a good book (investments, of course). Click here to read more. Vivek Bansel Internal Finance Director Vivek is a 3rd year Joint Mathematics and Economics major at Thurgood Marshall College. Vivek enjoyed his time auditing 3 years of expenses for a small non-profit with his mom and decided to pursue accounting in the future. He joined UIS to be a part of a professional team environment with strong goals (and aspirations). Vivek is currently taking Actuarial exams but is keeping a future as a CPA in the cards. Michael Tam Alumni Relations Director Michael Tam is a Management Science major at ERC, he is actively involved with UIS because he found UIS is not only a place where he explored his opportunities in a financial career, but also a place where he can develop his communication,networking and leadership skills. Furthermore, Michael believes UIS will soon become a well recognized organization and he wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to be one of the key officiers in making that happen. Michael is planning to gain more experience in the financial industry before he graduates so he can become a well properous financial planner, and eventually found a major corpration of his own. In his free time, Michael likes to workout, excercise and also all sorts of outdoor activities such as running, go carting and getting lost in the cities, because then every picture he takes will be a worthwhile adventurous story to tell.
