FAQ - UIS: Undergraduate Investment Society

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Undergraduate Investment Society?

The Undergraduate Investment Society (UIS) is a highly diverse, student-run organization committed to empowering the UCSD community through financial literacy.

Who is the UIS for?

The Undergraduate Investment Society serves everybody, not just Economics majors! Over half of our members major in engineering, communications, applied math, or something completely different. All students, from budding chefs to musicians to architects, need to learn how to manage their money, so that they can enjoy it now AND retire early.

What can the UIS offer you?

The Undergraduate Investment Society stands ready to provide students with the financial knowledge that will prepare them to invest and manage their finances now and in the future. Our Professional Speakers Events, Interactive Workshops, and annual Virtual Stock Competition provide great opportunities for members to gain insight into personal finance, investing, and possible careers in the financial industry.

So, is the UIS just Stocks and stuff?

Absolutely not! We are truly a full service, pre-professional student organization. If you want to learn how to take charge of your personal finances, we will provide you with the right tools. If you want to learn how to get into private equity, start your own hedgefund, become a financial consultant, or jump into big time real estate, we will arm you with the right knowledge.

How can I become more involved?

There are also several leadership opportunities for motivated students. We encourage students to become officers or committee members in our organization. Those partaking in this program will gain invaluable experience in Leadership, Management, Marketing, Organizational Finance, Professional Conduct, Project Development, Sales, Effective Networking Methods, and much more. Check out our Different Committees under About Us!

Do the UIS have connections with companies?

We have many relations with companies all over San Diego, and a growing alumni base joining companies such as Brandes Investment Partners, Nicholas Applegate, and Google. Although we cannot magically land you any job you want (company requirements are company requirements), we can definitely connect you with key figures, and lead you in the right direction.

Do the UIS do any actual investing?

We don’t actively manage a portfolio. However, our sister organization, SF Investment Committee, actively manages $185,000. With discipline and an eagerness to learn, we can empower you with the knowledge to improve your personal returns. If you are not currently involved in playing with the market, we can teach you how to set up a brokerage that is just right for you.
